Celebrating Gould's 80th and Canada-Greece's 70th: Events in Athens

The Canadian Embassy in Athens, Greece is not only celebrating the 70th Anniversary of Canada-Greece diplomatic relations, but also honouring Glenn Gould's 80th Anniversary as part of their year-long events until October 2013.  

Today and on November 22, the Embassy has programmed a special tribute at the Onassis Cultural Centre to honour Gould's life and career.  Highlights include:

- a screening of the 1979 television documentary, "Glenn Gould's Toronto"

- the launch of a new Greek publication called "Glenn Gould: Thoughts in Music" by Stefanos Theodoridis

- panel discussion with Costa Pilavachi, Senior Vice-President Classical A&R at Universal Music Group International; James Oestreich, music critic at the New York Times; and Christos Carras, Executive Director of the Onassis Cultural Centre

- a Gould tribute concert by Canadian pianist Marika Bournaki, making her debut in Greece

Marika Bournaki Documentary Debut: I Am Not A Rock Star

A featured performer at past Glenn Gould Foundation events, Canadian pianist Marika Bournaki makes her big screen debut in Toronto this Friday.

I Am Not A Rock Star intimately follows Marika's life and career over a period of eight years. Shot in cinema verite style in airports, hotels and concert halls around the world, and inspired by stunning piano performances, the film dramatically unfolds to reveal the poignant coming of age of an ambitious and talented pianist, and the consequence of her lifelong journey to make it.

Celebrating Glenn Gould and the Group of Seven in the North

Dale Innes, musician, Music Coordinator at Algoma University and a member of the organizing committee for the annual CAPT Group of Seven and Glenn Gould Train Event in Northern Ontario shares the story of this year's memorable trip.

"On September 22, a group of 120 people boarded the Algoma Central Railway in Sault Ste. Marie to travel to the Searchmont Resort, where they experienced a presentation on Tom Thomson, this year’s featured artist. This presentation was given by noted art historian, Michael Burtch, and renowned Canadian actor, Jack Wetherall, who portrayed Tom Thomson through a reading of his letters. This was followed by lunch and a tribute to Glenn Gould in the form of a giant birthday cake to celebrate his 80th birthday..."
