Admirers of Glenn Gould will know how diverse his creative tastes and interests were.

He was a great devotee of cinema and was especially interested in the contribution that music made to film. His own forays into music for film, the scores for Slaughterhouse Five (1972) and the film adaptation of Timothy Findley's The Wars (1983), show his enthusiasm for the medium, along with his extended legacy of television productions about music.

Called THE SOUND OF MOVIES: Masters of the Film Score, we think Gould would have been delighted to see this year's edition of The Toronto Jewish Film Festival with a 12-part series celebrating the Jewish composers who create the music for the movies, through the artistry of the film score.

Honouring Leonard Cohen - Monday, May 14, 2012

The Glenn Gould Prize Gala Concert in Honour of Leonard Cohen

This book focuses on three aspects in Glenn Gould's (1932-1982) musical thought and practice: Gould's embrace of music technology, his notions of the ontology of music and musical interpretation, and the place of his thought in Canadian intellectual history. Focusing not only on Gould's writings on music technology but also on those of Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980) and Jean Le Moyne (1913-1996), this book provides a fresh perspective on Gould's thinking, which was embedded in and keenly alert to the intellectual world outside music. The book also touches on Gould's public reception, his national iconicity, in Canadian literature and Hollywood movies. Gould's stardom is discussed as a phenomenon more commonly associated with contemporary popular culture.

From the artist:

When I first heard Glenn Gould playing the piano, I was instantly inspired not only to find more of his recordings, but also to explore his unique personality. The more I learned, the more interested I became in his story, as if I had uncovered a mysterious treasure.

Glenn Gould never ceases to captivate my musical and artistic imagination. As a result, I was inspired to create these two paintings. One captured outside in nature and the other of Gould being lost in the pleasures of music at his piano in the middle of the night.
