The Glenn Gould Foundation 2.0

The Glenn Gould Foundation was established September 19, 1983. At the time, it was a collective effort by Gould's friends and colleagues to memorialize a great artist and ensure that his multifaceted contributions to our culture would never be forgotten. They conceived of The Glenn Gould Prize.

Now twenty-five years later, The Glenn Gould Foundation is in the midst of a (r)evolutionary change, moving to become a global cultural institution, and to raising the stature and visibility of The Prize to a level of preeminence and recognition that reflects Gould's own stature the world over. With both a Canadian and parallel U.S. Foundation, and a board of directors including men and women of international distinction on five continents. Our objective is to establish The Glenn Gould Prize as an honour unsurpassed in the world of art and creativity - a world symbol of excellence that elevates the work and disciplines of the creative individuals to whom it is awarded.

Our trajectory is perfectly illustrated by the Eighth Glenn Gould Prize, awarded in 2009 to Dr. José Antonio Abreu, founder of Venezuela's national music education and youth orchestra system, El Sistema. The week-long Glenn Gould Prize Celebration of Music mounted by The Glenn Gould Foundation set a spectacular and exciting new mark for arts awards (see feature coverage).

Music and all forms of artistic communication are pathways to understanding and reconciliation among the world's people. With the selection of Dr. Abreu as our most recent Prize Laureate,  The Glenn Gould Foundation set the course for future Prizes to highlight and promote the potential for music and the arts to serve the humanity and advance the common good. These ideals and standards—and the thrill,  drama and inspiration of celebrating the our future laureates' world-changing achievements—will be a feature of all Glenn Gould Prizes to come.

Watch this website for announcements of great new projects and initiatives that The Glenn Gould Foundation will be introducing in the year ahead, in celebration of Gould's spirit and legacy, and the kinds of forward-looking ideas and artistic excellence that his life and work exemplified.
